"Speed Bumps"

"My Christian brothers, you should be happy when you have all kinds of tests.  You know these prove your faith.  It helps you not to give up."

                                                                                                            James 1:2-3

Speed bumps.  Ugh!  They drive you crazy when you're trying to get from Point A to Point B.  They slow you down.  You have to keep tapping on the brakes to keep the car from jumping and jerking.  On the other hand, speed bumps serve a purpose.  They protect the people who live on that street by deliberately slowing down the traffic.  Sure, they might present an obstacle to the driver, but to the homeowner, they're a blessing.  Maybe it's time we look at our spiritual speed bumps through this same lens.  The little bumps in the road might be annoyances in the moment, but perhaps they serve a greater purpose.  Maybe - just maybe - they're teaching us to persevere.  Maybe they're building our faith.  Only time will tell.  In the meantime, look out!  There's a speed bump ahead.

Lord, we don't care for speed bumps.  They're so annoying.  But we get it.  You need to slow us down at times, to protect others or us.  Thanks for the reminder that they serve a greater purpose, Father.  We trust you, Lord.  Amen.
